Now that the iPad details have been released, let's see how I did on my predictions:

  1. The Tablet will offer newspaper content and micropayments via your iTunes account
Verdict: Didn't happen. Looks like it's only books for now.
  2. It will have strong support for video iChat
Verdict: Definitely didn't happen. Doesn’t even have a camera.
  3. 720p streaming movie rentals
Verdict: The device does 720p, but I can’t tell if streaming rentals are available for it. 1/2 credit?
  4. Text input will be with a stylus or split-screen keyboard (left-hand keys on the left side, right-hand keys on the right so your thumbs can reach them)
Verdict: Heck no – they went with the most obvious solution.
  5. Gestures that require all 5 of your fingers
    Verdict: Doesn't look like it.
  6. Trickle-down of new features from The Tablet to the iPhone’s operating system (new home screen, new theme, new multitouch gestures, etc.)
Verdict: Too soon to tell. It looks like they've ditched the blue chrome for grey in apps like Safari, and are now letting you choose the wallpaper behind your app icons. I guess I'm only wrong if they never do these things on the iPhone. :)

Yikes - I was wrong on most of them, and I wasn’t 100% right on any of them. I blame the economy!

I also put a list together of things that I thought wouldn’t be included in the tablet. How did that go? I predicted there wouldn’t be:

  1. Support for bluetooth keyboards
Verdict: Got this one right, but barely - you can get a dock that has a keyboard attached, just no bluetooth.  Edit: Looks like I’m wrong – bluetooth keyboards are indeed supported! This is pretty sweet, now you can go all “minority report” at your desk if you want by replacing your monitor with the iPad.
  2. Support for non-apple-approved apps (I’m predicting everything must go through the App Store, and has Apple’s approval)
Verdict: This one's right, too. Already the backlash has started.
  3. E-ink screen (definitely going to be full-color)
    Verdict: Yep.
  4. A virtual keyboard that requires both hands
Verdict: Got this one wrong - Apple implemented this in the one way I thought they never would.
  5. A roaming data plan that has anything to do with AT&T
Verdict: Wrong again - AT&T has this device wrapped in its clutches.
  6. A browser that has anything to do with Adobe Flash
    Verdict: Got this one right.

4/6 3/6 on the “won’t haves” and either .5 or 1.5/6 on the “will haves” lists, depending on how you look at it. Probably not ready to turn GavinsStuff.com into an “Apple Rumors” site just yet!

I was a little surprised by two things they DIDN'T demo:

  1. Push notifications
  2. Multi-tasking

#1 exists on the iPhone, but is ugly. #2 doesn't, and while it isn't noticeable on a mobile device, on a tablet it's borderline essential, especially in complex apps like iWork. By creating a tablet-compatible version of iWork, Apple situates the device as a serious machine capable of actually letting you "get stuff done" (e.g. creating content vs. just consuming it). Multi-tasking is a somewhat glaring omission if we’re expected to spend hours and hours drafting novels and listening to Pandora on this thing.

Other random thoughts:

  • What happened to the stocks, weather and “clock” apps?
  • Did you notice how weird the tiny “slide to unlock” switch looked on the huge screen?
  • How long until they phase out the Macbook Air?
  • Why not allow a bluetooth keyboard, if you’re already selling a special dock with an attached keyboard? (Probably because you have to buy the special dock with the attached keyboard)
  • Could the three- and four-finger gestures on OS X theoretically be implemented on the iPad to do the same thing (app switching and Exposé)?
