Gavin's Stuff

A collection of thoughts exceeding 140 characters

I've been meaning to write a whole bunch of browser extensions for a long time, but there are two problems:

  1. I don't "have the time" (read: "don't care enough about them")
  2. None of these ideas are profitable

#1 is probably because of #2. In any event, here's a few ideas that I've accumulated over the past few months:

A "Data Exporter" button. This would let you grab a table of data from a web page and easily paste it into Excel (or export as a CSV file). I haven't found a good way to do it yet, and would really like it on sites like vrbo.com since they don't have a sort by price feature.

A better "History" or "Bookmarks" view. I want thumbnails (I'm not a fan of Safari's CoverFlow), the ability to easily generate bibliographies, and statistics on how much time I spent on each site (per session and aggregate). In addition, it would be cool to graphically see how I wandered aimlessly from page to page on sites like Wikipedia.

WPM calculations. I'd like to open a tab that displays my average WPM (words-per-minute) typed into text fields. I type a lot of emails -- it would be neat to see how fast I am, and if I'm getting better. Yeah, I know, totally a super-geeky feature.

Click-to-edit for any site. It would be cool for site owners to edit the content of their own web site right in their browser, then email the new markup to their webmaster for implementation. Image uploading, resizing, text formatting, etc. should all be possible. I'm thinking something like Coda Notes, except instead of drawing on top of a web page, I'd like to change the web page itself.
